Network marketing isn't perfect, but it absolutely is a better way. That is the subject of a keynote speech I delivered in 2013 that I am sharing with you here today. It is a very powerful message for anyone in the network marketing profession that is working in pursuit of achieving their dreams. I share with you my inspirational story and the most important lessons I've learned on my own personal road to success.
My journey started all the way back in 2000, fresh out of college when i was first introduced to network marketing. I remember the excitement I felt the first time I saw a presentation. I was living at my parents house and making less than $30,000 working a job at a local bank in the commercial loan department. The speaker in front of the room shared with us all his personal story of having gone from being completely broke only a few short years prior to now making more money in a month than I was making in an entire year. I didn't need to hear anything else, I signed up right on the spot.
I was pretty naive when I first started. I just assumed EVERYONE would be interested when I shared the opportunity with them. My very first phone call I got a reality check that wasn't necessarily going to be the case. One of my best friends basically told me that I was “crazy for doing something like that” and that he “hoped I hadn't given them any money”.
That was my first introduction to the emotional roller coaster that we all have to ride while building the business. I went from being completely excited to now questioning whether or not I had made the right decision. I decided that I would just keep pushing forward because as far as I was concerned the other option just wasn't an option for me.
I knew that working for someone else wasn't going to give me the lifestyle that I desired. My job at the bank wasn't exactly affording me the ability to do all the amazing things I wanted to do with my life. I barely had enough money to pay my bills and I was living at my parents house!
The way my story played out over the next couple of years was far from the story that the speaker told about his life when I watched that very first presentation. I was not what you could consider an “overnight success”. As a matter of fact, my entire first year I didn't recruit A SINGLE PERSON into my business.
You may hear that and be thinking to yourself, “Why didn't you just quit?” The answer to that question is an incredibly powerful lesson to anyone that is looking to build a large, successful organization in this profession. I didn't quit because the people that were mentoring me and the people I was working with became my friends.
It was the relationships that I formed with these people that kept me around long enough to “figure it out”. One of the things that you learn in network marketing is that people will quit on a company but they won't quit on friends. It is so important that you understand this when you are building a team.
I'm so thankful that I did stick it out that first year because I eventually came to a very important realization that completely changed my business. My entire first year I thought becoming successful in network marketing was about me getting lucky. I was always focused on finding that “one right person” that would turn my business around.
Here was the big “ah-ha moment” I had that changed things for me. I finally started to realize that it wasn't about me FINDING that one right person, it was about me BECOMING the one right person. I started to understand that success isn't something you pursue. When you become the person that DESERVES the success, that's when it shows up.
In the video above, I go through in detail how my story played out after I had that very important realization. I share with you the biggest lessons I learned from that point forward on my road to success.
This is a speech I gave in 2013 as the keynote speaker at the company's national convention I was working for at the time. What made this so special was the fact that my entire life, public speaking has been one of my biggest fears.
The fact that I was asked to give this speech and was on that stage in front of thousands of people was something I never would have believed would ever be a possibility. At the end of the speech I bring out my Mom, Dad, Sister and Brother-in-law and their 4 kids.
I wanted to share this moment with all of them. Looking back, I can honestly say it was one of the greatest moments of my life. The feeling of pride and accomplishment I had in that moment is something that I will never forget.
I'm excited to share this with all of you because I know you will get a ton out of hearing my story and the messages in my speech. Hopefully it will inspire some of you to have the faith to keep moving forward and never quit on the idea of making your dreams a reality.
